We are Mike and Mandy Whannell. We have two wonderful kids. We relocated to Monett in 2012 for Mike's job.
What do you love about living Monett?
Mandy: The thing I love most about Monett is the people that surround us. You won't meet a stranger.
Mike: The company I work for has provided a good work-life balance. We live in town, so I have a short commute allowing me to maximize time with my family.
What brought you to Monett?
Mandy: We were living in Northwest Arkansas when he received the job offer. We originally decided to move outside of Monett and Mike would commute. After a few years, we chose to make the move to Monett to spend more time together as a family. I was apprehensive at first, but this place has become home. Everyone is so cheerful and kind. The neighbors are fantastic.
We have fallen in love with Monett. We've sunken roots here.
What was your first impression of Monett?
Mike: Initially, there was some concern. Neither my wife nor I had lived in a community this size. We were truly surprised when we started adding up the things to do and the resources available to us in Monett.
Mandy: We were expecting to have to work hard to fit into this tight-knit community, but the moment we arrived people were stopping by to introduce themselves and inviting us to dinner. Everyone was so welcoming!
How have the kids settled in?
Mandy: They make new friends everywhere we go!
What do you do for fun?
Mike: We are very family-centric. We like to go to the park and the YMCA. The YMCA has a new outdoor pool with waterslides and a beach area for smaller children. The indoor aquatic center has diving boards, canoes and an indoor ropes course. It keeps our kids busy all day.
Mandy: Our kids also like hopping on the golf cart and cruising around town. We'll take a picnic and frisbees to the park. If we want a change of scenery, we'll drive 20-minutes to Roaring River to hike the trails. We also like going to the Springfield Zoo. We are explorers. It's a new adventure every day.
What are the housing options like in Monett?
Mike: Equity was a priority for us. I'm a numbers guy, so the price per square foot and variety of homes we had to choose from was really attractive. We found that you could get almost twice the home in Monett in a great location.
What is the education like here?
Mandy: I'm a big fan of the school system in Monett. There are several options to choose from. We send our kids to a private Christian school and it has become a second home to them.
Do you have any advice for someone thinking about moving to Monett?
Mike: Monett will surprise you. It's not just a rural small town. The amount of opportunity available because of the industry here provides a great network for younger professionals. Most people will also never find a shorter commute.
Mandy: As a stay-at-home mom, this community has been a fantastic support system. When we first moved here, I felt alone but I took the time to meet people and got involved in activities. The people here lift me up and support me as a mom more than I could have ever imagined.
Mike: Take the time to find the right neighborhood. Driving down the main street will only give you about a 15 percent view of the community. When you take the time to dig into the community and meet the people, you'll understand its value.
